Do You Know Your Asbestos Obligations?

Understanding Your Responsibilities Under the Asbestos Regulations

The Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016 outline specific requirements for a Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) to identify and manage asbestos in a range of situations, including:

  • Regulation 10 – Duty to Ensure Asbestos is Identified at a Workplace

  • Regulation 21 – Duty to Identify and Remove Asbestos Before Demolition of a Structure or Plant

  • Regulation 22 – Duty to Identify and Remove Asbestos Before Demolition of a Home

  • Regulation 25 – Duty to Identify and Remove Asbestos Before Refurbishment of a Structure or Plant

  • Regulation 26 – Duty to Identify and Remove Asbestos Before Refurbishment of a Home

Asbestos-containing materials continued to be used in some building products and construction materials until the introduction of the Asbestos Regulations in 2016.

This means that if your home, workplace, or building was constructed prior to 2016, there is a possibility that asbestos-containing materials may be present.

Before undertaking any renovation, refurbishment, demolition, or maintenance work, it is important to have suspect materials professionally assessed to ensure compliance and protect the health and safety of everyone involved.

Identify and manage asbestos risks within your property with confidence.

Asbestos Consultants NZ can help you determine the most appropriate survey for your property and compliance requirements. As an independent consultancy that does not undertake asbestos removal, we have no vested interest in finding asbestos-containing materials, ensuring you receive unbiased advice and accurate reporting.

A Management Asbestos Survey is a non-intrusive inspection designed to assess all visible and accessible areas of a property. It is suitable for buildings that remain occupied and considers normal day-to-day activities, including routine maintenance.

Where asbestos-containing materials are identified, the survey will detail their location, extent, condition, asbestos type, and any recommended actions. We can also assist in developing an asbestos management plan to help protect employees, tenants, contractors, and other occupants while meeting your legal obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.
